About SOCMA

Who We Are

SOCMA, the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates, is the leading international trade association serving the specialty, batch chemical manufacturing industry.  From our headquarters in Washington, DC, SOCMA advocates for flexible policies grounded in sound science and works to ensure that Congress and the regulatory agencies do not adopt a one-size fits-all approach to our industry.

SOCMA is, first and foremost, its members.  Our member companies encompass every segment of the industry. They operate more than 2,000 manufacturing sites and employ more than 100,000 workers.  SOCMA members play an indispensable role in the U.S. chemical industry by producing intermediates, specialty chemicals and ingredients used to develop a wide range of commercial and consumer products.  These products are essential to the life, health and well-being of people everywhere.

Established in 1921, SOCMA supports the industry with programs that maximize commercial and networking opportunities, increase public confidence and influence the passage of rational laws and regulations. In 2005 SOCMA launched ChemStewards®, the first environmental, health, safety and security management system designed for our unique sector.

In addition to our visibility on Capitol Hill, we are well known for our compliance assistance. As part of our ability to serve our members as a compliance provider, SOCMA has often partnered with regulatory agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency. ChemAlliance is a significant example of such partnerships and the type of assistance we provide. After all, compliance with regulations is not only good for the environment, industry employees, and local communities, but it is also good for business.
