EPA Assistant Administrator Steve Owens recently sent letters to the presidents of major trade associations reiterating comments he made at the GlobalChem Conference in Baltimore March 30th regarding confidential business information or CBI. He asked that the associations encourage their membership to:

  1. Review old files and rescind any CBI claims that are no longer necessary;
  2. Notify the agency about declassifications; and
  3. Strictly limit future CBI claims.

The EPA said that it also intends to also contact companies directly.

The letters were sent to the presidents of the American Petroleum Institute, the American Chemistry Council, the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association, the American Cleaning Institute, the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates, and the National Association of Chemical Distributors, among other groups.
