Today, President Obama nominated Gina McCarthy to replace Lisa Jackson as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Currently the head of EPA’s office of Air and Radiation, Ms. McCarthy had previously worked as Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, and as Governor Mitt Romney’s energy and climate advisor in Massachusetts. She has been praised by members of the environmental community, as well as by many industry sources. The McCarthy nomination now goes to the Senate for consideration – first, by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. If she is eventually confirmed, as expected, she will need to be replaced as the head of the Air Office. Janet McCabe, currently a Deputy Administrator at that office, is a leading contender for the top slot.
